African horse sickness is therefore classed as a highly infectious disease, notifiable to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE). <br />Mixed type - This form is a combination of acute pulmonary and subacute cardiac types. The disease starts with mild respiratory signs,<a href="http://www.myskitz.com/profile_blogs/0510VENUS20/&action=view&id=339954" target="_blank" class="postlink">Jordan Spizikes Book Review Sacred Places by Ken I</a>, followed by the swellings associated with the cardiac type; incubation period is from 5-7 days. <br />Read on <br />Infectious Diseases That can be Passed From Horses to Humans <br />What is a Coggins Test? <br />Equine Respiratory Disease <br />There are three main forms of AHS with varied symptoms dependant on the type. <br />A fourth mild form of AHS, known as horse sickness fever, is mainly found in donkeys and zebras which have a resistance to the development of the disease in full. This form is uncommon in the highly susceptible horse, and has an incubation period of 5-9 days. <br />African horse sickness is a disease caused by the African horse sickness virus (AHSV). The African horse sickness virus is an Orbivirus (from the Reoviridae family of viruses), with nine different strains; primarily carried and transmitted by species of the midge Culicoids family. Once a horse has been bitten by a midge carrying the AHSV, the horse becomes infected with the viral disease African horse sickness.
