,NHL JerseysZimmer’s less is more approach worked
In reviewing the tape from the Bengals 15-10 win over the Ravens, defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer noted that it was a solid game by his unit. Not perfect but pretty good.
On Joe Flacco’s 30-yard touchdown pass to Derrick Mason Jersey during the third quarter, Zimmer said that the Bengals were blitzing but that the Ravens had called for full protection. Johnathan Joseph was in good position at the beginning of coverage but lost Derrick Mason Jersey halfway through.
The game was also a lesson in how sometimes a simpler approach works better.
“We were more like what we usually are. And we definitely weren’t overloaded,” Zimmer said. “Against New England we had checks for this, checks for that. I overdid it. They were thinking about checks instead of playing football.”
The biggest thing that helped lead to the four interceptions was the Bengals ability to get pressure on Flacco. In their review of the game tapes, the coaching staff had 15 quarterback pressures from 11 different players. Nine were by the offensive line, four by linebackers and two by the secondary. While the amount of blitzing was the same, it was more effective.
Zimmer was pleased with the play off the line, especially ends Robert Geathers and Antwan Odom.
“They’re not quite getting there, but they were better,” Zimmer said. “It’s like everything. We’ve got to work on improving each week. I think we improved a little bit.”
It should be an interesting matching against the Panthers this week as Zimmer matches wits with coach John Fox and defensive coordinator Ron Meeks.
Zimmer is well versed in the Panthers from his days in Dallas and also his one year in Atlanta. While rookie Jimmy Clausen is making his first NFL start, Zimmer said that he still expects the Panthers to continue to stress the run.
