[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]ay, Hearing Impaired persons have access to all types of advanced courses. Even then they face significant challenge when they seek higher education or vocational opportunity. At the moment there is no Discrimination law in India. There should be a law where Hearing Impaired persons are given same opportunities as that of normal persons. Hearing Impaired persons need equal opportunity, not lip sympathy.
The goals of bridging the gaps:
? To make open all fields of study
? To focus on employability outcomes
? To create result-oriented system
? To enable disabled persons to make equal contributions to society in terms of their economic and social life participation
? To generate awareness among public about hearing disabilities and the needs of Hearing Impaired persons
? To advocate the rights and requirements of Hearing Impaired person
National-level initiative is needed, which include
? Establishment of state-level Disability Co-ordination programs to provide greater coordination of services for disabled people in vocational education and training. Allocation of funds to create study materials so that Hearing Impaired persons can learn with ease
? Development of effective system to identify and raise awareness about important issues
? Formation of strategic partnerships between training institute, lawmakers and potential employers to provide equal opportunities to people with disabilities
Removing education barriers:
Education is the most important issue for Hearing Impaired people. Generations of Hearing Impaired children have been and will continue to be ��educated' in a system controlled by people who are not Hearing Impaired and who focuses on deafness as a defect that needs to be fixed. The system attempts to educate them by using a language (English) that they neither know fluently and nor can access fully. These generations of Deaf children have emerged with poor English skills,article7063, poor education, poor general knowledge, and poor self-esteem.
Employment is the second most important issue.
Support services for Hearing Impaired persons
Hearing Impaired student must be provided adequate support services such as:
? Interpreters, who can translate lecture into language known to candidates.
? Counselors, who should be made available to all students to discuss personal, academic,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], or psychological problems.
? Individualized services. Some Hearing Impaired students seek assistance with class&assignments or personal issues that they cannot share with others. The factors to integrate disability groups
? Involve the Hearing Impaired community. Self help is more effective and efficient.
? Ensure the availability of technology enhancements such as websites, mobile telephone short message services (sms),[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and other visual information sources to assist Hearing Impaired students.
? Encourage students to participate in vocational education and training. Interpreters should be available.
? Undertake staff training. Staff should be trained in b[link widoczny dla zalogowanych] sign language skills.
? Provide a wide range of language support services. Many Hearing Impaired students require the same language support as a person from another language background.
? Teaching group should be a manageable group. Valuable interactive sessions with the help ofsubtitled videos, PowerPoint presentations,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], handouts of lectures notes and web links on course materials are proven successful strategies to ensure the clarity and availability of courseware for all.
? Prepare course material using the Models of Instructional Design to make things easy for Hearing Impaired persons. Programmed courses where progress of understanding is evaluated at small increments are also beneficial.
? Create support groups. Support groups can provide support and minimize isolation. Hearing Impaired students should be included in mainstream courses along with normal students.
? Create pressure group for lobbying. Financial needs can be met when government is forced to spend money on facilities required to ease learning and provide value-added jobs to students.
Managing Hearing impaired Employees

Hearing Impaired people encounter difficulty at work because their disability is not visible. If you are dealing with H/I persons, ask them how you can make changes in the environment to make the work place better for them.
The communication gaps with H/I people are due to the following facts:

1. People assume that H/I people can hear and understand everything they are spoken to if they are wearing Hearing Aids. However, it should be understood that hearing aid picks up all types of noises, not just speech.
2. It is not easy for people who are not hearing impaired to understand the difficulties of H/I persons because it is an invisible ailment which we don't take seriously. If you really want to assess their needs, spend a day stuffing your ears with cotton and taping your mouth. Only then you can plan what aid H/I persons need to accomplish a job and how they could be effectively communicated.
If you are employing an H/I person, follow these guidelines. They can be your potential revenue earners.
Guidelines for employers:
1. Patience is the key. Understand that communication is a delicate thing. You need to evolve how H/I person can be explained; getting annoyed is not the solution.
2. Don't start conversation before they are ready to listen to you.
3. Look directly at an H/I person as he/she will hear you by your sound and lip movements.
4. If you are using an Interpreter, ensure that the H/I person is well conversant with the sign language used by the Interpreter.
5. Use flashing light as alert mechanism rather than sound.
6. Use sms, chatting and e-mails. It is always better,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], even for normal people, to communicate in written mode than in spoken words.
Training at Work place:
Training is a continuous process. Hearing Impaired persons need special care during training. Following strategies need to be adopted:
1. Use circular seating arrangements. If that is not possible, front seats should be reserved for H/I persons and their interpreters.
2. Face the class while speaking. If an interpreter is present, make sure the trainee can see both the interpreter and the trainer.
3. If there is any interruption in the class, get the attention of H/I person before resuming the session.
4. Use Visual information frequently. Visual information is the primary means of communication. Films, diagram, graphs, cartoons or any other visual means are easily understood by H/I people. If charts, graph, pictures, etc. are used, describe the material and then show the training aid. This allows the learner to focus on one major stimulus at a time.
5. Be flexible. Allow an H/I student to work with audiovisual material independently and for a longer period of time. Ensure, don't assume �C the trainer needs to ensure that H/I persons have understood,article7063, rather than assuming that they have understood and continuing with newer learning objects. Frequent evaluation is a key to successful learning.
6. Identify a suitable location for the instructor. Light source should be behind the learner. Trainer should not stand in front of a window or in a dark area as it makes speech hearing difficult.
7. Peers as helpers. The peer sitting next to the H/I may help him in following the correct page or in taking notes. The peer can also make carbon copy of the notes so that the H/I person will have his/her own notes and copy of the peer's notes.
8. Avoid difficult words: Trainers need to avoid using difficult words and instead should use simple words.
9. Preview course material: Whenever possible H/I persons should be allowed to preview the material and their b[link widoczny dla zalogowanych] doubts should be cleared.
10. Take care of fatigue: H/I persons may feel exhausted more easily than normal learners; their fatigue should not be considered as their disinterest. The fatigue may be due to continuous strain during learning.
