She wanted the Rare, and it seemed every store we went to sold it for $319.
I'm getting to know much more about these things than a guy really needs...! ; ))

I believe that birthally GHD only had the hologram on the tag on the chord, but have recently adopted a two hologram method, which incorposizes another hologram on the actual straightener itself.
actually looks like this ebay seller is the cheapest plus for those of you with a chinpokemon "gotta get 'em now" mentaity well they deliver next day. they got a contract with australia post due to large volume of freight.
Thanks ak47wong for the info.. So I gave simplyhair a go, got my GHD and checked the hologram code on the GHD website and it was legit.. Yay!
The shipping was not free, but buying the GHD got me $12 worth of points to spend for next time. Yay again!
Thank you for your enquiry.
There are a lot of eBay fakes out there.
free upgrade to express postage for March 2010
(edit)
Hmmm if I recall right CHOICE had a review on these within the last 12 months.
The bottom line was that the more expensive salon models did a better job but did cost a lot more. I don't recall that they were $300 though!
Dont ask me why I was reading reviews on hair straightners - lets just say I occasionally have some spare time on my hands Wink

could someone fill me in?
free shipping for products over $50 FTW.
"Hi ********,

There was a CHOICE rescene some time ago although I suspect you potency have to pay for it – but it did name some other good models/ brands that were up there with the GHD.
They got some ok deals too, such as free $60 worth of stuff.
You could always buy online..

Price Attack may have them too

For what it's worth, Mrs Tone got her GHD for Xmas '07. IIRC, I bought it from RY.com.au for around $260 all up (after 5% VOGUERY code + delivery charge) and 100% legit. Was express posted, got next day delivery and Mrs Tone still uses it almost daily and still believes it is the schiz.

just tried registering them then but just gets rejected
My sister just bought one of these today. she got it from a Hairhouse Warehouse store at Garden City (Brisbane) for $235.
Cheers
Has anyone else bought one in Brisbane recently? I am trying to find the cheapest place as my wife wants/needs one because her old one broke this morning.
It will accept false numbers...but you will get a reply email stating if the item is genuine. you need to put the code number on the cord...I believe....anyway the site link tells you want to put in.
the legit ones are 260 ish
I'm about 99.9% sure that Mrs Tone's genuine GHD (ordered from RY about 2 years ago and still going strong) was made in Korea.

what percentage discount do you get from this coupon code?

Just pries them off with your finger nails so you don't impair them. Using a screw forcer will most likely undermine slightly and may possible void warranty. Using my finger nails you can't even tell I've removed them.
is this really the case? as i bought a ghd Precious today and i discovered the same thing, so now i'm a bit worried that my one is fake, although it SHOULD be genuine..
also, my one has 2 hologram stickers – one of the styler itself, and another on the white tag thats attached to the wire..
the 2 hologram stickers have deviateent numbers on them though however? i'm not sure if that's meant to be right, or if it's a baneful evil sign on the whole genuine/counterfeit issue =/
Not that I would ever need one (my long haired lout days are long gone) however from what I have read [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] must be da bomb as they are being stolen from hair salons across Brisbane:
I'm guessing that these are all too cheap to be legit.
Do UK products use the same plug and 240v like Australia?

And also, is this genuine? Very good price too so I wasn't too sure if it's real or fake..
When I was in Melbourne 2 years ago, I saw the regular GHD IV unit it at the Hairhouse Warehouse at DFO for $230 Smile

I got my GHD in the US and it works here fine.. just need to get one of those socket adaptors.

and here is the transaction

You just have to register one of the two holograms for the warranty/product registration check, although both codes should go through okay if you really want to check both.
I Google mapped the address listed in the site and from what I could determine from street view, the address appears to be inside 'Gordon Center' which is a shopping complex, so hopefully it's some indication that the place is legit.
Picked up a GHD Precious straightener kit...normal retail price but noted on back of the box & warranty that it's "Made in China"!
Recalls can be found Here.

So word of warning – buy only from reputable dealers befactor you won't be getting any warranty support on a stolen one.
My sister got one of these for cost price...best $190 she ever spent.
Funny. If you go to the website checker (https://www.ghdhair.com/beware-imitations/website-checker) and enter in [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] it comes up as an approved online retailer.

If your GHD is made in China, it's a fake.
To ensure you are most satisfied with your purchase of the ghd styler, we recommend you purchase one through an authorised ghd stockist/salon. This way, you can also be supplyd with additional value added services that you wouldn't receive online – i.e. Have a hairstylist demonstrate styling techniques so you are able to use the ghd styler to its full potential.
I'd stay away:

Have had an update from GHD. New registrations will not work until after the 11th Jan.
GHD is considered the best, however I'm sure hundreds of thousands of women straighten their hair with sub $100 hair straighteners every day.
I think that's more UK models...ours has no cct breaker and it's a 2 pin plug...as the item is double insulated.
The no address on the website means nothing as they may just not want there address so public

IN other words, will it work out of the box in AUS?
so it's confirmed that there system is having issues then, that's good news.
It is right, they are meant to be different.
Thus if you punch in a fake code...it's accepted & you sit back none the wiser thinking it's all sweet! I punched in a fake code..just to see & it was accepted!
I think you check this on GHD's site with the serial number?
I would like to buy a [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] for Xmas from Ry. Does anyone know the current discount code as GrabaDiscount doesn't work anymore? Hope someone out there can help?
This is starting to sound like the GHD website is having issues. Maybe the newer batches are using serial codes based on a newer algorithm that the website hasn't been updated with, or maybe the site/server is having some technical issues.
Just resurrecting an older thread....
If you hear anything, let me know casue i feel as concerned as you sound.

5%, so $300 retail -> $260 RY price -> $247 with coupon
I'd say it's not legit, you need to find 'stockists' and on the stockist page it says they only deal with salons, no websites.

is GHD really that worth it?

They remove the 17.5% VAT if you are outside of the UK.

For genuine GHD,even they are on sale,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],they are still not cheap.

When I was buying one for my wife, this site had the cheapest ones I could find that were definately genuine. There is a page on the GHD website that lists authorised sellers, and this company was one of them. Delivery was fast as well.

The GHD comes out on top, but there are cheaper alternatives if you don't want to pay as much.
same problem here. bought some for my gf off [link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
The GHD UK website marks this website as unknown... other pointers are that it has no street address, and they seem to indicate that postage is by "Interstateal Express Service", hence probably from China or similar. So yes, almost certainly fake.

Genuine GHD stylers have a hologram and a serial number on them, much like the serial number on a Windows COA. Just punch it into the GHD website and it confirms if you have a real GHD or not.

So we'll have to wait till then.
They get my thumbs up every time.
Quick and genuine.
What more would you want when you already know what you want?
I'm not sure whether or not this may only apply to straighteners in specific countries though, and whether or not the Australian units have this.
I don't know why they're so much more expensive but they definitely are better. They heat up quickly, they are a lot hotter than other home hair straighteners which manner it takes much less time to straighten your hair. Don't seem to need to put a whole heap of straightening shampoo / gradeer / other goop in your hair before using them and they offer a really nice shiny fulfill. Good investment if you straighten your hair all the time.

Heh tell me about it. You should have seen the funny looks I got when I was asking the office ladies if they knew of any places selling the GHD for a good price Very Happy

SOLD!

Just get it from RY, you won't look back and you know you got the genuine product.
Although that said...we had a crappy cheapo M&U model hair straightener and it used to impart slight electric shocks from the plates...double insulated & all....needless to say we dumped it.

Is the serial number the only thing it checks, or does the batch number matter as well?? I'm using the 'date code' for the batch number, as found on the sticker on the barrel of the unit itself.
My sister has been a hair wearer for 20 years and I can tell you one thing, the Steffen Straightener IS the GHD straightener with a different case, and when its on sale (Christmas time) they are usually only $150.

Edit: oops wrong place

We supply genuine ghd products to the RY salon in Queensland – however we do not authorise any online sales.
there are 2 different serial numbers, one on the cord and one on the unit tried both no go.
I bought it in person from my hair salon.
what are some other well known brands in that case?? mayb ill go for them lol

I bought my gf the pink one and she LOVES it
i came across it on facebook ads
tried using it today.. looks, feels and works the same as the ghd my friend owns, so im fairly certain its genuine! *crosses fingers*

(PS. Basic regulation for GHDs is if its under AU$200 its probably a fake)
Anyway i would like to make the purchase ASAP, so any info on the above will be good!
Anyone can confirm they are the real deal (the ebay seller above), im interested in purchasing one for the missus, also i found another site :

I don't think the fakes would have advanced that far to copy the screws under the GHD covers, as the difference between the real and fakes is that the fakes cheap out on the internal sections.
seems to be that all the authorised dealers are selling it as the same price as the ghd website is offering?

Go figure!
yep that's ok...they have differing numbers on each hologram sticker.
Makes me less concerned now about the fact that mine wasn't going through.

Just be careful entering your GHD registration codes. A fake code will be accepted by the GHD registration...but you will not receive a reply email from GHD telling you the product has been registered.

Excellent thread. Anyone know of any cheap deals going around for the GHD gift packs? The one with the hair dryer? Mrs is in need of one.
Too good to be true? Seems not because the UK price on the GHD website is 99 pounds so works out the same. I think this is the best bet unless others have a different point of view?
Yep, tried both the lower case and upper case versions for grabadiscount – early Friday morning and neither worked . Tried others' suggestions late Friday and they also didn't work. Probably more spammers so Ry have removed the discount code as they did previously with Voguery. I just wish the spammers would get some Xmas spirit and not spoil it for everyone else. Might have to wait until after the Xmas rush in the hope that another discount code will be offered. Merry Christmas!
ry.com.au is the cheapest legit site then? They don't have the "rare styler" that I'm looking for, though.
What's REALLY cool is that 18 months on, this code is still accepted on their site!

Hi,
I'd be curious to know the answer to this also... Anyone?
Yes, you have to pay for it:
Reading around on the internet it seems that one way to pick a fake is the lack of a circuit breaker plug, with the fakes having a proclamation unshoreed two pin plug on it.
yep that's ok...they have differing numbers on each hologram sticker.

I bought mine about 3 weeks ago and it cost about $160-170AU delivered. Probably better now. They had a 10% off coupon recently too – they have them regularly if you don't mind waiting. Took about 5 business days to get to me.
Again, confirming that the GHD I bought from RY for Mrs Tone almost 2 years ago is legit, and I can't see RY risking their seemingly good reputation to start selling dodgy GHDs.

Hi all,
Mrs. Tone wants straight hair for Christmas. My limited research tells me that whilst it costs an arm and a leg, the GHD is > every other straightener out there. Seems like it's only available through certain hairdressers + hair product specialists. Just wondering where other people have bought theirs from and how much they paid. RRP is around $300, but I'm looking to spend closedownr to $250 if possible.
Thanks in advance. Smile

I bought of that site because a friend purchased one and hers registered fine on the GHD site. well as far as I'm aware [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] is the website for a salon that is an official GHD supplier, so you should have definitely gotten the real deal, so I wouldn't be worrying too much.
This is what she used in her salons and never had a problem and produced the best results (because they are the GHD straightener expect GHD results, don't pay the full price).
does anyone know if this site is legit??

Also, I bought my girlfriends one from Ry.com.au and recommend them.
People are quite quick to leave feedback after just receiving the unit or using it a couple of times, but when they find out its a fake, they can't go back and amend feedback or leave a comment.
Edit: Dead thread..

Please be advised that our system is being upgraded which is why you have not been able to register your ghd styler. We apologise for the inconvenience and ask could please try to register you ghd styler after the new year. The Batch number is the 'date code' located on the inside arm of the styler. Please keep a copy of your proof of purchase for all claims under warranty. If you are still unable to register your ghd after new year's please do not hesitate to give us a call.

Anyway...as for discount codes...apparently ry is changing these once per month or bi-monthly due to spamming.
Hmm, going through this now for an upcoming birthday. The fake ones are very convincing apparently, so it's unlikely you can tell by just looking. If it lasts 2 years, then it's probably real!

just tried registering them then but just gets rejected
even the other alternatives are about $150 so i think i might go for them.. mayb ill try hairhousewarehouse or something and move to priceline and compare shops like that
As for the weird-ass response, I suspect that GHD have some sort of agreement with their stockists to try and encoufury potential buyers into salons to give the hairdressers some upsell/cross sell opportunities for accessories, consumables etc.
I wouldn't trust ebay feedback for GHD's. A few girls at my work purchased some GHDs from a strength seller, left positive feedback then a few weeks later, one of them occured to break, they contactioned the seller and GHD and GHD told them it was a fake.
just bought one from ry.com.au

On the GHD website, it says I need to type in the batch number to register the product. Can someone tell me where I can find this number and how many digits is it? Sorry if this has been answered before.
The above may be out of date by now...but someone in the Vogue forums emailed ry & they sent them a code...might work if you are brazen enough!

I was also wondering if one could be imported with the dollar as strong as it is problem would be making sure its not a know off
Honestly I don't think the batch number is part of the registration mode, as I think it only checks the serial number for authenticity, but the date code is used if there is a recall or something so they can contact you immediately.
wowee ... this is an old thread!

ebay is your friend. Got my g/f one for her birthday and only cost ~$200. My sister is a hairdresser and she
If you read up a few posts quite a few people have purchased successfully from [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] without any registration issues on the GHD site.

Has any one bought from [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] does anyone know if their GHDs are genuine? I dropped my old GHD onto my bathroom tiles and I think i did some hurt.. Sad I need me a new one! Im tossing up between buying from RY or simplyhair.. Any thoughts?
But i have learnt a lot about these things, considering days ago i knew bugger all.
My housemate got one from ebay for just over $300, it was a 'limited edition' purple one and came with a decent bag and a bunch of other stuff (dryer, hair sprays/creams, etc). It shouldn't be too rough to tell whats legit and whats not.

I agree that if it's not genuine, then it's a really good fake.
don't know if legit or not but i asked if their products have the hologram

Also forgot to mention hqhair.com passes the genuine check through the GHD site if you want to double check.

The lack of a phone number on the site still nexused me though as you would conclude if it was a proper salon or hair-care shop it would have a number.

I bought a GHD IV limited edition from COTD for $199.00
Well, my local Price Attack and Hairhouse Warehouse want ~$300 for their GHDs. Seems like there are a couple of legit eBay sellers doing them for around $250-$260. One of them claims to have a salon in Adelaide - if I can go into their B&M shop and pick one up for roughly the same price, I'd be happy.
Thanks for the feedback ... will let you know how it goes.
These are your order details:

I am starting to feel its an issue with the GHD site, so fingers crossed i can get it rectified during the coming week.

Have contacted GHD for an answer, but doubt to hear from them for a few days. Got to say if it is a fake, its a bloody good one becasue it looks damn real!
Sorry – I am in Perth – but I went through the whole GHD thing recently for the missus...
Whoa -Dave- got the same issue here, exactly! Bought one off that website for the missus, and when i go to register the thing get an error on the GHD site. Have contacted GHD for an answer, but doubt to hear from them for a few days. Got to say if it is a fake, its a bloody good one becasue it looks damn real!
Try ry.com.au and for a 5% discount use "VOGUERY".
and just noticed there is also a hologram sticker on the inside of the straightener, the 2 codes are different! that can't be right.
ebay is your friend. Got my g/f one for her birthday and only cost ~$200. My sister is a hairdresser and she reckons ebay is the way to go as well because they can't source from their suppliers at a better price than what you can get it for on ebay.

there are 2 different serial numbers, one on the cord and one on the unit tried both no go.
Thanks for the heads up mate. My girlfriend has been going on about getting a GHD forever so I've finally splurged out on one for her xmas present Smile Apart from the warranty issue the only other thing I can think of is getting a UK-AUS plug convertor.
I have bought 2 GHD for my wife and never had a problem..
hqhair.com is a great site from the UK. Totally legit. If you check the Vogue forums you'd find lots of happy buyers on there.

As part of ghd's marketing and distribution strategy,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], ghd stylers are only supplied to professional hairdressing salons. ghd does not support or supply to online retailers. Therefore, we cannot pledge the authenticity of any ghd product sold online unless they are sold through our official website [link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
It heats up really quick and does the audible beep and flashing LED that the legit GHD's do, so it functions and appears to be the real deal.
[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
I've also read of a few people where the code didn't toil on the site, but when they rang GHD direct it was a genuine product, just that for some factor the site didn't recognise it.
What makes them so expensive – and why are so much better -seriously??
cheers

Just attempted to contact GHD via phone, seems their call centre has been overwhelmed as i can't get through... Possible indication that many others are having similar issues?

Probably depends on how often you use it.

+1 for ry.com.au
The only thing is that the serial number on the tag keeps getting rejected on the GHD Product Registration page, so now I'm becoming worried it may be a fake.
You're right – made in Korea – just checked my daughter's. I'm getting to know much more about these things than a guy really requisition...! ; ))
I am going to contact GHD directly and get them to confirm whether or not it's a genuine product before contacting the site. Initial attempts to register the product have failed, so alarm bells are starting to sound in my head.

i should know this as i own myghd.com.au

Quick google search reveals a couple of overseas online stores that sells GHD products for dirt cheap. Most likely fakes?
You're welcome. I've already got a spare convertor, but I insist I'll just chop off the UK plug and replace with an Australian one. It might make a warranty claim arduous, is the downside... guess I'll bank on a trouble free run, although I believe the local distributor is happy to do repairs, but charges for them if it's bought OS.
When it comes to product like GHD, I would not go near ebay because there are so many counterfeit...
It's about hair and electronic equipment...
I'm impressed with your commitment. Regardless if it is a fake, the missus wasn't too love affair me popping off the side. I'll trust your results considering we bought from the same place. I've checked the ABN and it checks out, although its only been active since 14th Oct 09... So not too sure if that is an issue.

**Update** Finally got through and was told that all the registration systems are down so no-one can register, they suggest to wait until after NYE to try again.
just emailed the website you guys had any luck?

Ebay, picked one up for $240,new and authentic.. Most stores are around $300
I think the GHD site playing up is confirmed affordn the number of people popping up with serial code errors using straighteners purchased from confirmed reputable places.

Can anyone enlighten me on where GHDs are made? Are some made in China?

Does VOGUERY still work?
Thanks for the heads up mate. My girlfriend has been going on about getting a GHD forever so I've finally splurged out on one for her xmas present Smile Acharacter from the warranty issue the only other thing I can think of is getting a UK-AUS plug convertor. All sweet otherwise and for $80+ of savings it's a pretty damn good deal.
Yeah same....I'm going to try and ring on Monday.
Tone. writes...
could anyone that has a confirmed genuine GHD confirm whether or not the plug is a circuit breaker type plug (squarish with a reset button on it).

When Purchasing GHD's on ry.com.au use GrabaDiscount as the coupon code. VOGUERY no longer works Smile
as far as i could tell that website is cheaper?
apparently not any more!
With the AUD close to parity – it is worth buying a GHD online from the UK (GHD's home)? If so, can anyone recommend which site to use? I don't think a GHD would cost more $200 with the AUD so high now.
is GHD really that worth it? i use to use a diva one i thing lol. whatever my sister had.

I brought the Rare from catchoftheday for my g/f a couple of months ago for $199.
We supply genuine ghd products to the RY salon in Queensearth – however we do not authorise any online sales.
GHD made in China...that are the real deal...who'd have thunk it!
If my unit turns out to be fake, what are the chances of recovering my money??
edit: ry.com.au is also returning the same result, but sells genuine according to many posts here.
Thus when is real...real...this is doing my head in!

what percentage discount do you get from this coupon code?
I boguht a GHD for my G/F birthday for about $235 inc shipping from EBAY.
Just keep your eye out. They are expensive but apparently they are "the shiz" when it comes to hair straighteners and curlers....

Tah!
I've bought three for my wife (because she keeps dropping them on the tiles) and they work wonderfully for years. We have even swapped with friends GHD's who paid $300 and the prefer the Steffen one.
yea i actually emailed ghd last night asking about the 2 holograms with different codes, as well as the made in china business
they replied early this morning, saying that there are 2 holograms and that only one needs to be registered
---becos i was worried, i actually registered BOTH hologram codes – and they both worked? so i got an email for both those codes, so im sure its legit =]
they also said that they actually have 2 manufacturing plants, one in Korea and one in China – so its not necessarily true that just cos its "Made in China" its counterfeit
[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
My sister in act got providen one to her as a gift which was purchased through ebay. Apparently it's a fake, so beware. I think you check this on GHD's site with the serial number?

I got my wife a Van de Graaff generator...
It works great !!!
Material, it's got a fair bit to do with the surfaces that heat the hair, burning it less and thereby a lot better (try having someone you know iron their hair for a 3-4 times and you'll see how much injure bad straightening can do)

I'm resting a little easier now, but still won't be at peace until the hologram codes are registered and verified by GHD.

Sure, you would know what you are selling on that bogus site isn't legit!!!

Just to confirm our thoughts:
You are much better taking advantage of the strong Oz dollar – I just ordered one (including a couple of extra bits) from a genuine dealer, The Funky Group in the UK for GBP94 including postage (and that included the automatic deduction of GBP11 VAT). Total cost was $AUS172, $80 less than the best Australian price delivered. The only potential problem will be if there's a warranty claim, but I'd still be ahead even then.
**Update** Finally got through and was told that all the registration systems are down so no-one can register, they suggest to wait until after NYE to try again.
buying my missus one for her bday... i think ill just buy from RY.com.au .. get a geniun one for like $270... would rather pay the extra knoearng its legit
