The city of Barberton in Summit County, Ohio is known throughout the United States for its delicious fried chicken. Barberton Chicken is usually served with copious amounts of french fries, coleslaw and the local hot sauce made from rice, tomatoes and peppers. Over 7.5 tons of fried chicken is served to Ohioans and visitors each week by the four restaurants that specialize in Barberton Chicken.
How to Cook Barberton Chicken
Ingredients:
The recipe was originally brought over from Europe by Serbian immigrants who opened the Belgrade Gardens in 1933. The Barberton Chicken Dinner quickly became popular and soon several other venues sprang up during the 40’s and 50’s.
Beg, steal or borrow a well seasoned cast iron chicken fryer. Next prepare your fresh, not frozen chicken by cutting it into pieces of roughly equal size to allow for equal cooking. This is, according to local folk lore, a throwback to the great depression where it was important to get the maximum number of servings from a single bird.
