Using film and photography, the documentary film Say My Name portrays young, ambitious, inspiring women lyricists fighting the odds in the music business and in a culture that offers few opportunities for women. The focus is on these lyricists (rappers and singers) who want to be respected for their work, but includes others issues in their lives including motherhood, identity nike air max ltd, poverty, war, and HIV. Set in the multicultural inner city communities of London, New York City, Chicago, Philadelphia, Detroit, Los Angeles, and Atlanta, the film highlights women who inspire and those whom they have inspired.
The newest acquisition by Women Make Movies, the 2008 documentary Say My Name by director Nirit Peled, has its world premiere in the Documentary Feature Competition at the South by Southwest (SXSW) Film Festival in Austin, Texas, during March. The film is a production of Mamamess, based in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, an audio-visual organization founded by Peled and Dave Hemmingway that focuses on projects related to urban subcultures.
Featuring interviews and musical performances from a diverse group of women rappers and singers, this documentary introduces their personal stories about balancing professional dreams with the limitations caused by impoverished urban communities, ethnicity, sexism, and childrearing. In the misogynistic male-dominated world of hip hop and Rhythm and Blues, these female lyricists refuse to stifle their feelings and thoughts.

Say My Name debuts in the Documentary Features Competition at the 2009 South By Southwest (SXSW) Film Festival held from March 13-21. SXSW runs over nine days and includes 54 world premieres among its 108 features. The Festival highlights American and international cinema with narrative feature films, documentaries, special sections cheap air max 97, and sidebars. Comprised of music artists, mothers, businesswomen, and entrepreneurs, these women speak candidly about the issues they face today.
