What Are The Uses Of Ferrofluid?
There are hundreds of thousands of compounds that make daily live possible, but chances are most people can only name one or two of these super materials. One of the most overlooked materials employed in thousands of electronics today is ferrofluid. Ferrofluid is a fluid that contains small magnetic particles suspended within the liquid. These magnetic particles react to magnets so that the pull of the magnet has a direct effect on how the ferrofluid operates.
Because of the way ferrofluid reacts to certain magnets, researchers are still developing technologies according to the fluid's properties. Some of the future uses that are planned for the material include development of liquid body armor, as well as the ability to trace chemicals in the body through the use of MRI. Some of the current uses of the fluid include within computer hard disk drives. So how does a fluid react to a magnetic field in such a unique way?
The composition of ferrofluid is the main reason it reacts the way it does to a magnetic field. As a solvent,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it needs to be dense enough to keep the magnetite particles contained within the fluid from falling to the bottom. Additionally, a surfactant is needed and must be soluble within the solvent. A surfactant is a molecule contained within the compound that coats the magnetite particles and keeps them from bonding with one another within the confines of the fluid. By preventing this and allowing free movement of the magnetite,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it creates a much larger area that is responsive to magnetic push and pull. What happens when ferrofluid is subjected to a magnetic field?
A magnetized ferrofluid aligns magnetite particles along its axis of magnetization, which means the viscosity of the fluid is increased so much that it can almost become a solid, depending on the strength of the magnetic field. The real benefit to this is that the changes only take a few milliseconds to occur, so something that was liquid only moments before can become nearly solid almost instantly. One of the greatest uses of ferrofluid and this instant change property is found within cars that offer a smart suspension system. This suspension system makes it possible to adjust to the slightest bump in the road several hundred times within the span of just a few seconds,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], making cars that use ferrofluid within their suspension systems some of the smoothest cars available to drive.
The application potential of ferrofluid in the future is nearly untold,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], since there are hundreds of uses for this instant solid to liquid transformation through the use of magnets. If a way to perfect liquid body armor is created, then police officers and SWAT officials will have a new form of protection that does more than traditional Kevlar armor available to them now.Topics related articles:
