From Shrimp Boat Stowaway to Happy Fiance
I didn't intend to fall in love on my vacation; it just happened. After spending four years getting my marketing degree,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I simply wanted a break. I told myself I could use a breather before jumping headfirst into my career, so I booked a great trip to Australia with my best friend Gracie. I even told her before we left to keep me pointed toward the beaches and the water, and away from the guys.
So much for the best-laid plans. Contrary to my rational intentions,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], not only did I meet a guy, I met the love of my life - a wonderful Australian named Matty. Thus started a whirlwind romance, but after three heavenly weeks I had to get home. We wrote, used online video chat, talked on the phone, and within nine months I was booking another trip-without Gracie. Over the next 18 months I went another three times. On the last trip over, Matty popped the big question and I said yes!
Hardheaded Man vs. Wise Woman
I had been doing some research on the Internet and in the library about how to get a fiance visa for Matty to bring him to the States. Matty wanted to live in the States anyway, so I told him we'd get an expert to help us out. Unfortunately, Matty thought he knew better. He said he had lots of connections in shipping, and could take a shrimp boat to Hawaii and call me from there. Good grief. That sounded more than a little questionable, so I thought it might be best to look into the legal facts myself, find out what was really going on, stall him a little and then handle it the right way. So while he was sending me links to crazy pirate stories and immigration scams, I found an immigration law firm and got down to business.
Once I learned about the I-129F that I needed to file and talked with a nice attorney about it, I knew I was on the right track and felt much better. I found out what I had to do with the Department of Homeland Security's U. S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) office, learned all about the I-134, the I-864 for me, and the I-485 for him that would adjust our status after marriage,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and everything else. Just as important, I found out how Matty would apply for a K-1 visa right there in Melbourne at the U. S. Consulate after I took care of my first round of business in the U. S.
Details and Reconnecting
I needed Matty to assemble some personal information, so even though he insisted on still looking into his "foolproof plan, " he said he'd gather some documents for me. I needed some reports from the police departments detailing where he'd been since the age of 16, the story of our now-three-year relationship, and a few other tidbits. The fact is, I had to get him to assemble the info for the embassy interview, fill out the Form DS-156 in duplicate, do the DS-156K, and take care of all the other requirements-photos, medical exam, all of it. Then we had to get him to the Consulate for an interview.
I had Matty's mom take him to her home just outside Melbourne, and I flew in and surprised him! I told him we had an interview at the U. S. Embassy and that I'd worked everything out with the U. S. law firm and the Embassy people, and had even gotten some Australian civil servants involved in my little plan. He had assembled everything I asked him for, so we got the forms filled out, got him his interview,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and gave the Consulate the prepaid courier envelope they wanted. If all went well, he'd have his visa within a week or so.
The Confidence of Doing It Legally
I felt so good about doing it the right way - getting all our legal ducks in a row made sure we'd never have to look over our shoulder - and got on the plane home with a smile and a happy calm, knowing I'd be making Matty's reservations soon. There was only one small delay because of a missing page in his medical records, but Aussies and Americans teamed up to help get that handled within four days because everything else was tightened up right and ready to go. I know that if Matty had stowed away on that shrimp boat we'd still be waiting... or in over our head. He got to the States within three weeks of my return, we got married and it's been wonderful. Thanks to the Internet, and immigration lawyers who know what they're doing, Matty and I are an international love story with a happy ending!
