Egyptian FM accuses U.S. of imposing will
Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul Gheit on Wednesday accused the United States of imposing its will on his country by dictating on how to move on.In an interview with American PBS television, the minister said that "When you speak about prompt, immediate, now -- as if you are imposing on a great country like Egypt, a great friend that has always maintained the best of relationship with the United States, you are imposing your will on him."
Since mass anti-government protests erupted on Jan. 25 in Egypt calling for free and fair elections as well as an end to President Hosni Mubarak's 30-year rule,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], U.S. President Barack Obama and other top officials have oftentimes made public calls, at first for immediate transition but days later for orderly transition. In his latest phone call to his Egyptian counterpart Omar Suleiman on Tuesday,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], U.S. Vice President Joe Biden called for an orderly transition in Egypt that is "prompt, meaningful, peaceful, and legitimate." He demanded, among others,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], that the Egyptian government immediately rescind the emergency law and invite the opposition as a partner in jointly developing a roadmap and timetable for transition.
Gheit told PBS that Biden's advice is not helpful at all, saying "When I read it this morning I was really amazed because right now, as we speak, we have 17,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],000 prisoners loose in the streets out of jails that have been destroyed. How can you ask me to sort of disband that emergency law while I'm in difficulty?"
"Give me time, allow me to have control to stabilize the nation,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], to stabilize the state and then we would look into the issue,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," he added.Gheit first hit back on Sunday against foreign interference,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], saying that the Egyptian government rejected any outside dictates,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], especially from the Western countries. He told reporters that " Egypt is under no one's mandate."
Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood insists departure of Mubarak
Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood, the country's largest yet officially banned opposition bloc, said Wednesday that there would be real dialogue with the government only after President Hosni Mubarak departs."A new era must start in Egypt," said Mahmoud Morsi, spokesman of the banned group.
The government, which was restructured amid the massive protests lasting two weeks across Egypt, has held talks with oppositions including the Muslim Brotherhood for a road map of peaceful transition in the past days, while the group noted that the discussion does not like what they had expected."We neither want to nominate a presidential candidate nor to gain political power, all what we are seeking is a free and democratic Egypt," added Morsi."There must be an end to the crisis as soon as possible," he told the editors of Egyptian media on Tuesday.
Suleiman said that dialogue and understanding is the best way to achieve stability in the country, otherwise an "undesirable coup will be the alternative but we try to avoid this option," official MENA news agency quoted him as saying. The protests,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], however, show no signs of calming down. On Tuesday, tens of thousands of protestors gathered in the Tahrir Square, the epicenter of the protests,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], claiming they would not leave until the president resigns.
The Brotherhood commented that Suleiman's remarks were inappropriate, adding that the ouster of the president is the people's demand. The outlawed group also alleged that the army has been detaining people and torturing them, but they had no proofs on their accusation.
