Caskets Versus Coffins
Some people will argue that there is no difference in a casket versus a coffin. They insist that casket is simply the term we use for what we bury people in inside the U. S., while coffin is the term that Europeans use. However, that isn't really true.
A coffin is wider at the shoulder and tapers toward the feet. These are the things where you might see a vampire slumbering in an old Dracula movie. Coffins were the original burial tool because it saved expensive wood by not maintaining the width all the way to the bottom. Coffins today are traditionally still wood and very simple boxes that are unlined and unadorned. A coffin usually also has a flat top and is thought to be smaller, and therefore less cumbersome. They also have 6 metal handles,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 3 on each side,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], for pallbearers to use to carry the deceased to the gravesite.
A casket on the other hand is the same width from top to bottom. Generally caskets are padded and lined. And when you put a casket into the ground it usually fills a grave that has been lined with a vault or the resin grave liners. Both of these have sealed lids so the casket isn't merely covered by dirt like a coffin is. It's thought to be much more secure against grave robbers. Another benefit of caskets is that they can usually open at just the top so only the head and shoulders of the deceased can be seen at a wake or viewing. And a casket has an elevated cover as well as the handles for the pallbearers to use - although,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], these handles are generally bigger and a bit easier to use. Finally, caskets can be made from a variety of metals and come in many different sizes from infant to double oversized.
So,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], as you can see, even though the basic meaning for coffin and casket is the same they are both used to hold a deceased person they are two very different entities.Topics related articles:
