They live up to the hype and then some with their richly atmospheric music, deeply textured instrumentally and movingly uplifting lyrically. Precocious frontman Leeland Mooring is a preternaturally gifted songwriter, putting out a fresh sound that is accessible [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], yet distinctive, moody, yet stirring, and no small feat, his worshipful lyrics express the deep truths of grace and redemption with great vitality. The title track sets the tone as the opener, its melodious refrain sounding as if it was dropped from the heavens this morning. A master of melodies, this Leeland. And its powerful melodic beauty is matched by Leeland's passionate vocals, lifting this searing sonic treat to the heights of worship. The following track, "Reaching," highlights Leeland's lyrical ability to portray spiritual truths with dead-on aim, piercing the soul with word pictures ("leaping over walls to get to you [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] "breaking off our chains to run to you," and "leaving the lights on") that reach deep into your gut to shake your complacency. It's more of this kick-the-door-in school of worship with "Yes You Have," a driving worship track that drips with sincerity, its stellar bridge powerful enough to drop you to your knees in mid-stride.
Piano ballad "Tears of the Saints" serves as the album's centerpiece, its quiet strings stretched as taut as the deep heart cry of the lyrics. This Brit-like majestic track builds dramatically to a crescendo of spiritual release [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a heart-felt cry for the lost that cannot fail to move anyone with breath. The influence of euro-rock is heard, and Leeland adopts the same quiet straightforwardness of Tim Hughes, but he owns these songs as his own expressions of worship.
Lest you think the band (Leeland Morring: lead vocals, guitar, Jack Mooring: vocals, keys, Jeremiah Wood: lead guitar, Jake Holz: bass, and Mike Smith: drums) doesn't know how to just have fun, check out driving rocker "Can't Stop" or pop-rocker "Hey." The Beatle-esque "Too Much" is moodier, but still sparkling. Leeland closes out the album with more majesty, the soaring worship of "How Wonderful," its throbbing bridge lifting you from your clay feet even as you marvel at its xylophone touches. Closer "Carried to the Table" is nothing short of stunning. This gentle ballad drove me to my knees with its articulate humility. Leeland's iridescent debut is one of the year's best, and we can only hope that it is indicative of what is to come from this exciting new band. Do whatever it takes to get your hands on "Sound of Melodies."
