How Do Prostate Problems Develop?
Deep inside every man's abdomen, there's a small, walnut-size gland that,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], at some time in his life, is going to become a concern. If you're lucky, that will simply mean simple, regular tests. But there's also a likelihood that it will fall prey to diseases that can range from merely irritating, to potentially fatal. It's essential that you take a proactive approach to your prostate by maintaining a healthy lifestyle and getting it checked regularly.
The prostate sits below the bladder, wrapped around the urethra. Its main functions are sexual: it produces seminal fluid, it helps pump semen down the urethra during ejaculation, and it prevents urine from mixing with the sperm during climax. It usually has two growth spurts, the first at puberty. The second, which researchers don't fully understand, happens around age 30,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and it usually doesn't stop, creating the problems associated with enlarged prostate.
The prostate is prone to three diseases, which generally occur at various stages of life. Younger men most commonly get prostatitis, an inflammation of the prostate. From middle age on, it's benign prostatic hyperplasia, or BPH (prostate enlargement); and older men are most at risk for prostate cancer. Because it surrounds the urethra (the tube that carries urine from the bladder to the penis), problems with urination are the most common symptoms of all three conditions. Back and genital pain, difficulty getting an erection, and blood in the urine or semen can also be indicative of cancer, while prostatitis will often be accompanied by fever, chills, nausea, vomiting, joint pain or lack of energy.
It's recommended that every man over the age of 40 should have his prostate regularly checked with a rectal exam, in which the doctor feels the gland to determine its size. By age 50, PSA blood tests should be performed, which look at prostate-specific antigen; high levels may indicate cancer. Although it may seem like you're giving a lot of attention to a very small part of your body,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the fact is that the odds are stacked against you. If you live long enough, it's almost inevitable that you will have prostate concerns, as the numbers increase with age. About eight percent of all men 30 to 40 years old have BPH; 80 percent of 80-year-olds have it; and virtually every man in his 90s has some degree of prostate enlargement. One in every six men is diagnosed with prostate cancer. Only skin cancer is more prevalent among men, and only lung cancer is deadlier. Should your condition require prostate removal - a possibility with severe BPH or cancer - it could permanently affect your ability to urinate properly or maintain an erection.
Because the causes of many of the prostate gland's difficulties aren't fully understood, it isn't always easy to know how to prevent them. A healthy lifestyle is recommended, which can include losing weight, quitting smoking, cutting down on alcohol and caffeine, eating more fresh fruits and vegetables,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and exercising. A herbal supplement, saw palmetto, was originally used in Europe and is now common in North America; it inhibits the body's tendency to turn testosterone into a hormone called dihydrotestosterone, which is believed to trigger prostate enlargement. Regular sexual activity is also a good idea: research has found that frequent ejaculation is linked to healthier prostates. Above all, know the symptoms, and get checked regularly. You shouldn't obsess about your prostate, but you need to pay attention to it at every stage of your life.
