Make Your Own Fortune Teller Costume
I have always find gypsies to be fascinating, maybe because I wish to be free and careless as they are. It is the same thing that happens with pirates, which also inspire a lot of people because of their sense of freedom and lack of social restraints. Many times I tried to dress up like a gypsy and creating a fortune teller costume for Halloween was just a step away.
Those days, when I was only a child, there were not so many shops to buy costumes or materials from. So tailoring my own costume for the Halloween was no easy task. Today, anybody can dress like a gypsy fortune teller as there are nice models from which to choose that can be bought from different stores.
The History Of The Gypsy Fortune Teller Costume
The nomad people that traveled the world in caravans and they still do, even nowadays, are called Roma or Romani or,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], as most people know,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], gypsies.
The normal dress for a gypsy woman living in the 15th and 16th centuries was compose of a robe gathered at the neck worn over an under gown made of chemise. On this robe, the woman wore something resembling the Roman toga, meaning a length of cloth draped down the back, around the opposite waist, up the front and tied at the shoulder. The head was covered with a turban.
The actual costume of the fortune teller, familiar to us living [link widoczny dla zalogowanych]ay is practically a combination of different elements. As they were nomads, gypsies often tended to dress like the people they were living among for short period of times. A not so crazy guess about the fortune teller costume is that it combines clothing elements used in the Renaissance period, like laced vests, flounced skirts or pirate shirts.
How To Make A Gypsy Halloween Costume
If you do not want to buy a full gypsy costume ready to wear from shops and you want to make an original model to wear on the Halloween night, then you must pay some visits to the used clothing stores to search for some pieces of clothing. If you have a sewing machine and you know how to use it, buy some fabrics and a fortune teller costume pattern and then get to work. See below some tips on how to make your costume more interesting.
A Sample Of A Women Fortune Teller Costume
A nice outfit to wear on the Halloween night if you are a girl or women that want to pass as a fortune teller includes the next pieces of clothing: a long tired skirt in a bright color, a gypsy style shirt with a gathered scooped neck and puffy sleeves gathered at the wrist or long wide flowing sleeves, a brightly colored front-laced vest, some black leotard stockings, black shoes in your feet, a brightly colored sash for the waist and a similar bandana for your hair. Use some accessories like gold hoop earrings and some long, colorful beaded necklaces, as well as bangles for arms.
Another Outfit For The Girls
Another nice costume that you can wear for the Halloween can be made by combining a long wide-flowing black skirt, a white peasant's shirt, a black front-laced vest, a brightly colored apron or a shorter overskirt and a colored 2 to 3 inches wide headband. For your head, [link widoczny dla zalogowanych]se a long black wig with tight ringlets or curls and you will look even more like a gypsy women. Wear the same black stockings and black shoes and do not forget about the accessories.
Make A Men's Costume
If you are a boy or a man and you want to spend your Halloween as a pirate, you may try the next combination: black or brown breeches, [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a white pirate shirt, a long-length black or brown vest preferably trimmed with a gold-colored braiding, a red or another colorful long scarf for the sash at the waist and a colorful bandana. As an accessory,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], use one gold hoop earring.
There are many combinations you may make in order to make your fortune teller costume unique and original. You must just focus on some simple rules to get it right. Dress in layers and use fabrics that are loose and flowing. Accessories are important and you may choose from a wide variety of necklaces, large earrings and ankle bracelets. The sash circling your waist must always be of a bright color. Women also can let loose scarves to hang from the waist down. For the head, use bandanas, headbands and even choose an eye patch to be a more credible pirate. Bright colors will always work for a gypsy costume, so use purples, blues, greens, bright yellows, reds and even blacks.
