Obama says healthcare law "needs a tweak",[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
U.S. President Barack Obama said Friday that his signature healthcare law is not perfect and "needs a tweak,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," but it does not mean "refight the battles of the last two years.""I believe that anything can be improved. As we work to implement it,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], there are going to be times where we say,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], you know what, this needs a tweak,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], this isn't working exactly as intended,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], exactly the way we want," Obama said at Families USA Health Action conference in Washington,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], D.C.
He was basically echoing what he said in the State of the Union address Tuesday night,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], when he promised to work with Republicans to improve the law but offered few details on how to make it better."I'm willing to work with anyone,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Republican or Democrat, to make care better or to make their health care more affordable," he reiterated. One of the most likely things that may gain bipartisan support in redoing the reform law is a tax-reporting provision deeply unpopular with business.
"I've even suggested we begin by correcting what was a legitimate concern,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a flaw,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], in the legislation that placed unnecessary bookkeeping burdens on small businesses," he said.Obama also said he is open to ideas including patient safety innovations and medical malpractice reform.
Republicans have been vowing to "repeal and replace" the healthcare law,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which Obama signed in March last year. They have already pushed the repeal bill through the House of Representatives, where they recaptured control in November's midterm elections. But the bill is almost surely to die in the Senate,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which is still in the hands of Democrats."I am not willing to just refight the battles of the last two years. I'm not open to efforts that will take this law apart without considering the lives and the livelihoods that hang in the balance," said the president.
Clinton to visit Haiti on election standoff,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], reconstruction
U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will visit Haiti on Sunday to focus on the island state's election standoff and reconstruction efforts, the State Department said on Friday. In addition to meeting with Haitian President Rene Preval,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Clinton will meet with leaders of civil society,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], electoral candidates and the special representative of the United Nations to discuss the ongoing electoral situation and reconstruction efforts,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the department said in a statement.
"The United States and Haiti share the mutual commitment to building Haiti anew after the devastating earthquake one year ago, and to ensure a strong future for Haiti's people and its democracy,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], " the statement said.It added that the secretary will visit a cholera treatment clinic in Haiti.
Haiti held presidential and legislative elections on Nov. 28,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 2010. With the international community questioning irregularities in the process,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the Haitian authorities decided to recount the votes. The result could be announced next Wednesday. The second round of elections was originally scheduled for January 16, but has been indefinitely postponed.
